Obituary: John Bryan Reed Parker

John Bryan Reed Parker - June 11, 1936 to May 14, 2022

John was born in Seaford, Sussex and spent most of his childhood with his adopted family. Only in the last two years of his life was he united with his birth family. He was delighted to meet his nephews and nieces, the children of his brothers and sisters and cousins to Sarah, Alice and Helen. He was proud of his eldest brother Ron who flew Spitfires during WW11.

As a child, John had the freedom to explore the woods and fields near his home, helped the farrier, and the farmer milk the cows and bring in the hay.

At 14 he was sent as a boarder to Lancing College where he excelled at science, developed a lifelong interest in classical music and natural history, fenced, and shot at Bisley.

He graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in 1960 and married his fellow student Zillah. During his years at Barts he took up rock Climbing. He went to the Westminster Hospital for training in Anaesthesia. It was the commute that made us decide to emigrate. We landed in Saskatoon in minus 40 degrees F weather in January 1967. After three years in Prince Albert we moved to Saskatoon. John spent his professional life as an Anaesthetist at Saskatoon City Hospital with excellent colleagues. He served as President of the Canadian Anaesthesiologists’ Society and made many friends across the country.

We moved West to share a boat and enjoy sailing up through the islands. John built a house, so retirement on Salt Spring has been busy and enjoyable.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, by daughters Sarah (Scott), Alice and Helen and grandson Joshua (Alicia).

A memorial service on June 18, 2pm, at Anglican Parish of Salt Spring Island will be followed by a gathering of friends and family. In lieu of flowers the family welcome donations to the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society International Education Fund (CASIEF).
