Salt Spring Fire Historical Budget Review

When the Salt Spring Island Fire Protection District approves a budget it does so by passing a bylaw. The bylaw is then forwarded to the Province for its approval and then the property owners in the District are apportioned their share of the tax. I've gone back to District archives and what follows is taken directly from each year's approved budget bylaw. It should be noted that the annual budget does not reflect the total tax collected for each year as it does not include the costs for long term borrowing:

$262,600
$293,473
$339,900
$371,900
$383,600
$416,300
$422,300
$439,479
$504,350
$574,540
$611,214
$677,751
$726,900
$849,150
$987,300
$1,322,150
$1,625,880
$1,983,350
$2,200,000
$2,400,000 - [note that from 2001 to 2011 the budget more than quadrupled]
$2,300,000
$2,375,000
$2,375,000
$2,529,000

These rough numbers only provide a glimpse of the total picture, since it doesn't reveal the reasons for increases. It seems that the big changes came with the union contracts. The first contract ran from Jan. 2006 through Dec. 2010 and the second runs from Jan. 2011 through the end of 2016.
