Celebration Paddle at Grace Islet

It’s time to get together and celebrate success! Cowichan Elder Luschiim is coming to Salt Spring with the big war canoe on Sunday January 18 at 10 am. We’ll join him and others for a Celebration Paddle around the islet, and mark this special moment of community solidarity, achievement and history-making. We'll be going out rain or shine.

10am: Gather at the park to share some words and sing some if the many Grace Islet songs.
11am: Paddle around Grace Islet.
11:30am: Meet back at the gazebo at centennial park to share some food, celebrate our accomplishment and discuss future community ideas for honouring our local First Nations and ancestors who have stewarded these land for thousands of years.

Please keep in mind this is a sombre celebration meant to acknowledge the extended Salt Spring community who have rallied behind this cause. There is much damage and blatant disrespect that has taken place here to the ancestors and rare and endangered eco-system at Grace Islet. Burning Ceremonies and careful deconstruction over the coming months will need to take place before we can truly celebrate.

Please spread the word! All supporters are encouraged to participate on the water, or at Grace Point or by witnessing from the Coast Guard dock. First Nations representatives involved in the issue are invited, and we hope some will be able to attend. We’ll meet by the Gazebo at Centennial Park at 10 am and head out after that. There will be food and coffee for everyone, and if you can bring baking, fruit or other snacks to share, or can come at 9:15 to help set up, it would be much appreciated.

Boats can be launched at the beach beside Moby’s or at Centennial Park, but remember not to leave vehicles in the parking lots.. Be sure to dress warmly in layers, and bring rain gear and a blanket it possible. Please note that the final transfer of title has not taken place yet, and until we have our First Nations elders and grave workers present, it is not appropriate to step on the Islet.

Everyone who helped out in any way, big or small, has made a positive difference, and we’d love to see you on Sunday! So please come ready to share a good time!!

With hands held high in appreciation and respect, from the Protect Grace Islet Team.
