What's On this Week on CHIR-FM

A recent Salt Spring Live recording by Blair Francis, an interview with photographer and writer DL Acken; a show on the Great Canadian Camping Experience; a conversation with Homecare Salt Spring owner Valerie Louvet are among the swell things coming your way this week on your community radio station CHIR-FM. Tune in to 107.9 FM (or 102.1 FM in the South End) or stream the station online to hear more than 20 unique local programs on the Voice of the Gulf Islands.

Sunday (May 31) 3-4 p.m: On Harmonic Expeditions, the second half of this episode is dedicated to experimental, electroacoustic, ambient and entirely digital music created by Meredith Bates, Matt Robertson and Chris Gestrin. They recently performed together at All Saints After Dark, to celebrate the release of Meredith’s second album, The Observer Effect. Audio engineer WiL Shulba was engaged to provide an octophonic sound system for this event.. Show re-airs Tuesdays at 3 p.m.

Tuesday (June 2) 1-2 p.m.: On This Song, That Time, the theme this week is hikes and walking. Host Lesley Grott be hiking the West Highland Way in June and will be talking about famous hikes and pilgrimages and playing walking-inspired music. Show re-airs Thursdays 1 pm and Saturdays 1 pm.

Wednesday (June 3) 6-8 p.m: On Saltspring Sessions, host Sima Rehn features a recent Blair Francis Salt Spring Live recording “Ancient Fire” including an artist interview. Blair’s live-looped sound journeys have guided him to a place where improvisation and spirituality meet, where temples and stages blur lines, and where melody and heartfelt prayer merge. Drawing on tribal rhythms, electronic textures, and devotional vocal traditions, Blair builds immersive sonic landscapes in real time—weaving electric guitar, flutes, synthesizer pads, arpeggiation, didgeridoo, and chanted voice into something that feels both primal and transcendent. This Wednesday (June 3) from 6-8 p.m., the music and words of Blair Francis will be featured on Saltspring Sessions hosted by Sima Rehn.

Wednesday (June 3) 8-9 p.m.: On It’s About Story Time, pack your bags and gather 'round the propane fire as host AmanDa Bapty takes you on a classic Canadian camping adventure. From blackflies and loons to star-filled skies and the smell of woodsmoke, we're celebrating the wild, the wonderful and the the oh-so-buggy magic of the great Canadian outdoors. Expect campfire classics, beloved folk songs, and poetry that will keep you coming back to the woods, even if only vicariously.
