Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission (LCC) Meeting Report for April 16, 2026

The Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission (LCC) held its regular April daytime business meeting on Thursday, April 16, at 9:00 am at the SIMS Board Room (streaming online with TEAMS). Presentations and Delegations

- The LCC received a delegation from Jenny McClean on Rainbow Recreation Centre pool use.
- The LCC received a presentation from Jesse Giddings, Salt Spring Island Healthy Living Society, on a proposal to donate a synthetic ice rink for Salt Spring Island (included in agenda package). The LCC passed a motion, “That the proposal for a synthetic ice rink on Salt Spring Island be referred to staff to report back with additional information”.
- The LCC received a presentation from Jennifer Lannan, SSI Chamber of Commerce, on funding for the Visitor Information Centre and Ganges beautification projects. The LCC passed a motion, “That staff work with the SSI Chamber of Commerce to refine the proposal and define Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission authority, potential further funders, potential for additional phasing, and define responsibility for ongoing costs”.

LCC Business

1. Staff provided the LCC with the updated Quarterly Project Tracker (included in agenda package).
2. Staff provided the LCC with the updated Quarterly Motion Tracker (included in agenda package).
3. The LCC received the Ganges Crosswalk Project - Draft Crosswalk Analysis Report (included in agenda package) and passed a motion, “That the Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission approves the Ganges Crosswalk Project - Draft Crosswalk Analysis Report as presented in Appendix A.”

Motions and Notices of Motion

-The LCC passed a motion for same day consideration by Director Holman related to use of compost from the Burgoyne composter “That the Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission write a letter of support of the rezoning of the Burgoyne composter site to allow for the sale of products off-site.”
- Additional Notices of Motion were read into the record for consideration at the May meetings of the LCC.

Following adjournment, the LCC convened a workshop to hear from stakeholders on the subject of harbour management. A summary of that meeting will be included in a staff report presented at a future LCC meeting, likely in May or June.

The next meeting of the Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission will be a special budget meeting to consider changes to the 2027 provisional budget. It will be held at 9:00 am on Thursday, May 14, in the Board Room at SIMS and is open to the public. The agenda package will be available online by the end of business on Friday, May 8.
