Zen pruning is the art of working with a plant's natural growth habits to produce healthy ,aesthetically pleasing trees,shrubs or vines . It is a respectful dialogue between the pruner and the plant based on observation and understanding. Knowledge of individual species is essential as all plants have different needs ,desires and attributes . The process starts with the removal of the three D's (dead ,diseased,damaged) before moving on to the fourth D (direction) which shapes the future of the plant.
My passion for pruning started over 30 years ago when as a teenager I was given the opportunity to prune the fruit trees in my parent's Oak Bay garden. I have been working on my skills ever since , with education ( horticultural diploma from Capilano University and apprenticeship at Stonecrop gardens in New York) and experience (30 years of professional gardening). During this time I have also immersed myself in the teachings of the pruning master - Alex Shigo.
Winter is the best time for this work as it is essential to have the branch structure revealed . I am available for pruning;
- small trees
- vines (wisteria specialist )
- fruit trees ( very experienced in neglected orchards)
