Science Meets Story on the Grandest Stage in the Universe
We’ve all heard of the great Astronomers like Isaac Newton or Stephen Hawking, but what about the unsung female Astronomers? Come join Scott - astronomer and storyteller - to celebrate the ground-breaking and often overlooked contributions of female scientists to the study of the cosmos.
For the first time, Astronomy Alive will be joined by a guest speaker: Joy Hughes, a scientific programmer who has worked in the US Space Program on planetary science (and was part of the team who discovered water on Mars).
Get comfy inside the great room at the Nature Conservancy for a truly unique experience, with a light show, a projector screen, popcorn, warm tea, and the enchanting scientific and historical stories of prominent women in Astronomy.
Through storytelling and interactive activities, we’ll explore topics like comets, galaxies, measuring distance in space, and stars! Then, we’ll travel over 150 back in time to the Harvard College Observatory, to hear a story of the incredible perseverance, dedication, and brilliance of the “Harvard Computers”.
Weather permitting, we’ll venture outside to meet the sky, the starlight in our eyes and the cool air on our skin, and look through a 130mm telescope at distant celestial objects.
