Where’s Beach Dave?

Where’s Beach Dave?
Full NameLisa Speirs

You may have noticed more cigarette butts or litter on the ground around town than usual in the past 14 days. Previous to that you may have seen “Beach Dave” walking around town with his pick up stick and bucket picking up the trash that people thoughtlessly throw on the roads, parking lots, parks and beaches of our beautiful island. “Beach” Dave was on a boat on July 23 in Ganges Harbour that exploded due to a gas leak. He has second and third degree burns on 15-20 % of his body. Due to the extent of his injuries he was transferred from Lady Minto Hospital to the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. He has been in the Intensive care burn unit there receiving excellent treatment from the doctors and nurses. Dave has had 2 surgeries on his legs, which have received the most severe burns. His hands and one arm have second degree burns and are being treated as well. His face has second and third degree burns which are healing incredibly. Dave has a very positive attitude towards his recovery and what the future holds for him. He has big plans to run some programs for the children of Salt Spring involving garbage pickup and arts and crafts from things in nature to make it fun. He is collaborating with the Makers Space and hoping to get things up and running soon. Dave will probably be in the hospital for a few more weeks and then going back and forth to Victoria for appointments for a while after he returns home. Along with keeping our island clean, which he doesn’t get paid for, he also works at the Oyster Catcher. We are not sure how long the recovery will be or when he will be able to return to work. We have had a lot of people asking how they can contribute to help with the expenses of travelling and every day life until Dave is able to get back on his feet. We have set up a gofundme and any contributions will be used for medical expenses, travel expenses related to medical appointments and anything else needed to help him through this difficult time. He is really pushing his way through the pain to try to get up and walking again with a walker so he can return to this beautiful island we call home. We are truly grateful for all contributions and also all the love, prayers and good thoughts people have been sending his way. It is really contributing to his positive outlook on healing and we truly want to thank everyone. Even if you can’t contribute monetarily please feel free to check out the gofundme page as I will be doing updates as we have news. Thanks again,
Beach Dave and Lisa
