Wheat Weaving for Harvest Home
with Carmen Spagnola
From The Spirited Kitchen: Recipes and Rituals for the Wheel of the Year
To be held at The Root Food Hub
189 Beddis Road
Salt Spring Island
Sunday September 24th from 12:00- 3:00pm
A Fundraiser for the SSI Farmland Trust Society
Join us to celebrate the harvest season with traditional wheat weaving and storytelling.
We'll learn some basic weaving techniques including the five straw ribbon plait, a Welsh Sweetheart house blessing, and a Harvest Mother design based on the Bridey doll ritual craft in The Spirited Kitchen.
We’ll appreciate and honour local agriculture by using oats and wheat grown locally.
Wheat weaving is a near global tradition with deep roots in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. As we work on our pieces, we'll reach back in time and explore the mythology of Demeter, Persephone, and secrets of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Participants will leave with beautiful pieces of handicraft for decor or ceremony, a deeper connection to ancestral knowledge, and a felt-sense understanding of the precious bond between humans and grains.
Each registration comes with a copy of The Spirited Kitchen: Recipes and Rituals for the Wheel of the Year. (If you already own a copy, it makes a great gift!)
Light refreshments will be served; in full sumptuous style that Carmen offers with sincere generosity!
