At Salt Spring Therapeutic Riding (SSTRA), we draw on the skills, wisdom, enthusiasm and commitment of our volunteers to help riders achieve their goals.
Equestrian activities are the means through which we hope to achieve broader goals of personal and community development.
Volunteerism is the backbone of our society. Volunteers are one of the most important aspects of a therapeutic riding program, in fact the success of the riding program depends on the participation of a group of devoted volunteers who have chosen to work with us.
Do you like horses and have one spare hour a week? You could volunteer!
Experience with horses is an asset, but not a necessary qualification for SSTRA volunteers’ however, all volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
To volunteer in a lesson, we will provide you with a 3-hour training session where you will learn SSTRA's techniques for: grooming, tacking, leading, side walking, mounting and dismounting.
Side Walker: Assisting riders with balancing and interpreting instructor directions.
Horse Handler: Leading horses during lessons. Previous horse experience and assessment required.
