Update on the Meadowlane Residence and Community Hub Project

Our zoning application has been passed by the Executive Committee of Islands Trust. We have submitted our application to the Trust for a Development Permit, and hope to have that processed and approved in early 2020. These are the final documents we need from Island Trust.

As we move into the construction phase, we have created a Construction Advisory Committee. Volunteer members are Janet Smith (Chair), Stan Shapiro and Sue Hicks (GISRA Board members), Hans Hazenboom, Daniel Ruane, and Dave Henshall.. Staff members are Peter Elsser (Project Manager), Richard Walker (Project Director), Chantalle Charron (Executive Assistant) , Kirsty Smythe (GISRA Executive Director), Callum Crawford (Wheeler Crawford and Sons Architects), and Joel Thompson (Chief Financial Officer). This committee meets every two weeks or more often as required.

We are now working on the Building Permit application which will be presented to CRD in early March. We have entered into a contract with Kinetic Construction Limited who will be the General Contractor responsible for the construction of Meadowlane Residence and Community Hub. They will work with us to complete the Building Permit application, generate the required cost estimates, retain the needed trades, and keep the project on-time and on- budget.

We have entered into a contract with Peter Elsser to be GISRA’s Project Manager. He will oversee the construction work on our behalf and ensure that we have a well-constructed building which will meet all our specifications. Our architects, Wheeler, Crawford and Sons are a Salt Spring Island firm that have been working on the design of the building with us for the past year.

The following firms are working with us to provide the detailed specifications:
• Civil Engineering: Stantec
• Mechanical Engineering: Rocky Point Engineering
• Landscape Design: Macdonald Gray Design
• Structural Engineering: Herold Engineering
• Building Envelope: Herold Engineering
• Electrical Engineering: RB Engineering
• Interior Design: Catherine Youngren Interior Design
• Kitchen: Brugman

We plan to start construction in May, 2020 and complete the building by September, 2021. The project is becoming more and more real every day. If you are interested in booking a suite in Meadowlane please contact the GISRA office at Meadowbrook, 121 Atkins Road. Phone ‭(250) 538-1995.‬‬‬‬‬

It is now time to raise funds for the project. We have many naming opportunities should you wish to have your family recognized as a contributor to this very important facility. Please talk to Richard Walker about how you can support this much needed community project. (250) 537-7109‬
