Artists from the Fringe is a group of over 30 artists who attend the grassroots program called Art Jam. This volunteer-run program began in 2015 and is supported by the Salt Spring Arts Council, GIFTS, Crown Framing and Country Grocer. We provide a safe, welcoming space for members of our marginalized community, where they can be defined as creators and artists, rather than by the challenges they regularly face.

By celebrating their unique creative accomplishments and reinforcing the value of their work through public exhibitions, we promote positive self-identities and help build self-esteem. Obtaining support from community organizations and individuals has provided the ability to build bridges between our artists and the rest of the community.

There have been several changes in the last few years: we relocated from the United Church to GIFTS at 152 McPhillips, the white and blue building just across from the Art Spring parking lot; our wonderful Program Manager is now well-known Salt Spring artist, Stefanie Denz; and we also have two very special volunteers: Alida de Boer, who is responsible for all the healthy, delicious snacks, and Sophia Johnson, who sets up all the supplies and cleans up at the end of the day. I have stepped down from all the “official” duties and just come for the coffee and friendships that have built up over time.

We are excited to have two shows starting this month – the first one at the library from June 13 – July 30. The opening is June 13 from 2-4 pm in the Program Room and we would be thrilled to see you there! Two of our artists will be showing their work – Sherman Sherwood and CJ (Joseph) Reville, both very talented graphic artists with quite different styles. All the work will be for sale with the proceeds going directly to the artists. Light refreshments will be served.

The second show will be at the new gallery at GIFTS from June 15 – 30, with the opening on June 15th from 2-4pm. A number of artists will be represented here so this show will be much more eclectic. We are excited to be hanging work in this new addition to the GIFTS building and encourage you to join us in viewing the creations of our members.

Art Jam, like many small non-profit organizations, is struggling financially and having difficulty finding volunteers. The program is closed for the summer months; however, art supplies are distributed to folks in the parks. With support from the Salt Spring Arts Council, we hope to apply for a grant that would allow us to reopen in the fall. Failing that, Art Jam will likely end this unique program which has helped so many people over the last 9 years.

We would like to pay special thanks to the Arts Council, the United Church, GIFTS, Country Grocer, and Kevin Teneyke from Crown Framing without whom the art would not shine as brightly as it does. We would also like to thank those of you who have supported us in so many ways over the years and hope you will join us for these two shows.

“I did not ever consider myself an artist until I came to Art Jam week after week…It’s an evolution. You are changing how you feel about yourself.” -Nick
