The Salt Spring Island Conservancy is seeking a part-time Public Outreach Coordinator

The Salt Spring Island Conservancy (SSIC) is a non-profit organization and registered charity established in 1995. Our purpose is to protect and enhance natural values on Salt Spring Island and its surrounding waters. To date, we have worked with partners to protect more than 4,000 acres on the island. SSIC’s current team includes two staff, four core consultants, nine board members and over 150 annual volunteers.
Position: The new Public Outreach Coordinator (POC) will manage the SSIC’s volunteer program, communications, and facility/equipment.
The SSIC is a dynamic organization dependent on a large group of dedicated volunteers to achieve our conservation goals. The POC will manage our volunteer program with responsibilities including: recruiting volunteers for our diverse projects and programs; providing volunteer training; attending volunteer events and collecting volunteer waivers; and maintaining records of volunteer participation.
The SSIC maintains communication with our Island community through social media, newsletters and events ranging from hands-on workshops to invited speakers to work parties and guided walks on our nature reserves. The POC’s communication responsibilities will include: preparing advertising material, press releases and weekly email news updates; assisting in the preparation of new brochures and publications; coordinating the quarterly newsletter; managing the website; organizing and attending events; and coordinating signs and displays. The POC will also interact with the public by staffing the SSIC reception desk, answering the phone and responding to general emails.
The SSIC office and field equipment storage are located at our Blackburn Lake Nature Reserve. The POC’s responsibilities will include coordinating general facility and equipment maintenance and facility rental management.
The Public Outreach Coordinator reports directly to the SSIC’s Executive Director and will work collaboratively with other team members including the Finance and Records Manager and SSIC core consultants.
This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, Monday to Thursday, with the understanding that some flexibility in hours may be required depending on events and other activities.
The successful candidate will have:

• Enthusiasm for interacting with the public
• Strong organizational, administrative and time-management skills;
• Attention to detail and good record-keeping skills;
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
• Professionalism and respect for confidentiality;
• Experience in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Experience in website management and professional use of social media tools
• Own transportation
• IT experience an asset
A post-secondary degree in a related field (conservation, communications) and at least three years of experience relevant to the advertised position or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
