The Ostara Project's Documentary Film Night: An Evening of Feminine Jazz Power on the Big Screen!
| Organizer | ArtSpring |
| Date | 2026/03/13 |
| Start Time | 7:30pm |
| Event Length | 2 hours |
| Location | ArtSpring Theatre |
Part of The Ostara Project's one-week immersive experience at ArtSpring, this documentary film night offers behind-the-scenes insight into the making of Ostara's double-album project "Roots & Wings" and the lived experiences of women in jazz.
On the screen, audiences will see “Change the Tune,” a 30-minute documentary about the challenges faced by women in jazz; a short film about the making of “Roots & Wings”; and “Toones,” a jazzy animated short film co-produced by Ostara’s manager Lisa Buck. The evening also includes a panel discussion.
This screening shares stories of identity, equity, and resilience from women in the traditionally male-dominated jazz world. These films are part of Ostara’s "The Ancestors' Project,” which digs into work that embodies roots — ancestral connections, personal histories, and cultural legacies — and wings — bold creative risk-taking and musical freedom.
ABOUT THE OSTARA PROJECT:
Did you know that only 5% of professional jazz instrumentalists are women? The Ostara Project is changing that. Named for the Germanic goddess of the spring equinox, Ostara embodies hope and renewal by showcasing the formidable strength and creativity of Canada’s leading female jazz artists.
This ensemble brings together a powerhouse collective of visionaries, each a bandleader and composer in her own right: Jodi Proznick on bass, Amanda Tosoff on piano, Claire Devlin on saxophone, Rachel Therrien on trumpet, and Valérie Lacombe on drums, featuring vocalist Kim Zombik. From March 10th to March 14th, join these incredible artists for a powerful weeklong celebration of women in jazz at ArtSpring.
Tickets for the film night are $10 for youth and $15 for adults. To book yours, visit the ArtSpring box office or purchase.artspring.ca. For the full immersive experience schedule, visit artspring.ca/events.
