B.C. Moves to Ban Drug Use in Public Spaces

B.C. is taking action to make illicit drug use illegal in all public spaces, including inside hospitals, on transit and in parks. It’s part of several new measures introduced by the Province, focused on providing police with more tools to address public safety while offering support and access to treatment for people living with addictions. “Keeping people safe is our highest priority. While we are caring and compassionate for those struggling with addiction, we do not accept street disorder that makes communities feel unsafe,” said Premier David Eby. “We’re taking action to make sure police have the tools they need to ensure safe and comfortable communities for everyone as we expand treatment options so people can stay alive and get better.” The Province is working with the federal government to make changes to the legality of possessing drugs in B.C. This will provide police with the power to enforce against drug use in all public places, including hospitals, restaur…

What to Plant Now, Soil Amendments

The cold nights over the last month certainly slowed down the arrival of planting weather, but it is time to get onion sets, shallots, onion and leek seedlings into the garden if you haven’t already done so. To grow good-sized onions, they need to be planted as early as possible to have time to develop a good root system before the long days/short nights in June stimulate the plants to make bulbs. If planted too late (after mid-May) onions often don’t make bulbs at all. Which reminds me, if you want to try growing your own onion sets, sow seeds of a good storage variety the first week of May, directly in the garden. Plant densely (3-5 seeds per square inch) and don’t amend the soil with compost or fertilizer before planting because you want to these onions to stay as small as possible. As long as they are sown before mid-May they produce tiny bulbs that will be cured and stored same way as onions for eating. You should be able to harvest over a hund…

ASK Salt Spring Welcomes Owen Page, our MoTi Area Manager

April 19 Fifteen joined us for all or part of our time together at this ASK Salt Spring gathering that welcomed our Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) Area Manager Owen Page. After our Territorial Acknowledgement, we asked Owen what excites and delights him. Personally, he was looking forward to watching a great basketball playoff while enjoying a beer that evening. Professionally, he loves spending time in the communities for which he is responsible, always listening, learning, and seeking the best use of the resources he has been allocated. Later ,when asked if the number of Salt Spring emails were a bit overwhelming, he responded a resounding No. He appreciates hearing our suggestions. He is able to address some. Others he routes to the correct managers, keeping track and advocating for them, as appropriate. When asked to detail his area of responsibility, we learned that, although the Gulf Islands are split between three Area Managers, leaving Owen …

Trustee Candidate - David Courtney - North Salt Spring Water District

The Water District posted a review of the Candidates Q & A from April 10th on their website. It was well done by the CAO, Manager and Moderator. Of course they brought forward questions. The Big One - what are the most serious issues for you; 1. Resolving the Pending $40 Million Law Suit with Channel Ridge. 2. That goes hand in hand with lifting the 10 year Moratorium on water hook ups. 3. Continue to address and localize the water leaks throughout the piping system to prevent upwards of a 20% water loss. 4. Campaign to ensure the recent $10Mil Grant that came unexpectedly from the Provincial Government is spent wisely. It would be an Honour to serve the ~1850 Ratepayers of the NSSWD, the current Board of Trustees and Staff. From my perspective over the last 2 years there's been 5 significant changes that place the Water District on a mission for positive change and effectiveness. Reminder - Don't forget to Vote - Polls close 2 May 2024. Thank you, David Co…

The Signs Have Caused Quite a Stir for Local Residents

Signs. They are everywhere. You may have noticed a few more around Salt Spring recently. Artist Patrick McCallum's public art installation, which is on display as part of the Spring Art show now on at Mahon Hall themed and titled re:location involved McCallum placing several signs around the island with short messages like “They tried their best” and “Your choices”. The signs have caused a stir for local residents with critical comments on social media like “Road workers seem pretty annoyed taking these down all week! Would really be best to not make them look like street legal signs” and “At $400 a pop! Gimme a break! Art should at least be recognized as art, not some incomprehensible joke on the community. Of course public art is vital, sticking up a few daft signs affords the community absolutely nothing. It is precisely this kind of stunt that turns so many away from “art”. However the vast majority of comments were quite positive with comments like “i love that …
