The Return of Octogony
Two years ago renowned local sculptor/painter Michael Robb conceived of the idea of the Octogony exhibition. He assembled a group of sculptors, photographers and painters he knew and admired, and their combined work appeared in Mahon Hall to great response.
Sadly only three months after that exhibit Michael passed away leaving an enormous absence in our island’s artistic community. Michael’s wife Donna recently reassembled seven of the original eight artists that made up Octogony, and they are back to showcase exciting new work along with a selection of Michael’s paintings, sculptures and glasswork, most of which are previously unseen.
Well known sculptor Ronald T. Crawford is returning with provocative new pieces that explore mystery, light, shadow, symbolism and contradiction.
Sculptor Patricia Balsor is excited to reveal new paper-pulp works drawing from scraps of poetry, random photographs, and all manner of inspiration.
Photographer Michael Wall will be exhibiting a photo essay of pots made by his friend, the late master potter Lari Robson.
Susan Benson’s new work considers the relationship between the men who cut timber and the houses made from the wood, with juxtaposed colour panels evoking emotions related to these scenes.
Chintan Bolliger’s ‘Hidden’ series is an attempt to explore our habit of reinvention by reduction. Her paintings are an attempt to portray both the story as we have created it, and the missing pieces which promise deeper understanding.
Photographer Jen Holmes’s new work investigates themes of tension, conflict, sensuality and physical alienation in a series of striking black and white self portraits.
New to the group this year is Patrick McCallum who will be unveiling a series of abstract prints in addition to his most ambitious figurative piece to date.
Octogony will be mounted in Mahon Hall and run from September 25th-October 4th, 11am-5pm daily. Please note though it will be a live show, Covid restrictions will be in place regarding the absence of an opening; restricting entrance numbers; social distancing; and mask wearing.
There will however be artist talks, with a schedule posted at the show regarding times.
