Let's help Ken Lavell
| Full Name | Andy Higgs |
| Phone | (250) 537-6478 |
| Location | Saltspring |
I would like to introduce you to Ken Lavell. Ken has lived on Saltspring for many years and is one of those rare, talented, individuals who can fix anything.
Some may have met Ken when he repaired their household appliances, or perhaps when he showed up after hours to fix stoves and freezers in commercial kitchens and shops, helping to keep local businesses running; or you could have met when he fixed your kiln or potters wheel, boat or gate. After working in mills for a number of years, Ken turned his old-school machinist skills to the design and prototyping of new components, that expanded the comfort and mobility of wheelchair users. His involvement in the car and motorcycle restoration community is well-known and he has always generously given his time and expertise to anyone with a question; helping solving problems, building hard-to-find parts or one-off tools, and rarely charging what he should for the level of service he provides.
This is an appeal to all of us who have benefitted from Ken's skills and generosity; it is our turn to give back and show up for Ken.
On the 12th May Ken suffered a heart attack. After a week of tests at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, on 21st May he underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery. While his medical team is optimistic about his long-term recovery, Ken has a strict three-month recovery window ahead of him, during which he cannot work.
Why We Need Your Help
Being self-employed, with no company benefits plan or family on the island, this sudden medical crisis is a significant financial blow. Instead of focusing entirely on his recovery, Ken is understandably stressed about covering his basic living expenses and bills.
Ken is proud and independent, and would never ask for help himself. But, as his friends, we are rallying together to ensure he doesn't have to carry this burden alone. If you would like to help Ken navigate the challenging few weeks that lie ahead, please consider making a donation at Ken's GoFundMe fundraising page at https://gofund.me/8dda56d72
All money received will be spent to fund Ken's living expenses and rent while he is unable to earn an income. It will also assist in medical costs and travel associated with his post-surgery care, and to provide some peace of mind, aiding his recovery without the additional weight of financial stress.
Please spread the word; every dollar helps, thank you so much for stepping up, your generosity is greatly appreciated by Ken, and by all the friends that support him.
