School District #64(Gulf Islands) invites applications for the contract position of lead instructor of the District TASK (Trades Awareness, Skills & Knowledge) program, commencing January 24, 2022 to June 10, 2022. The contractor will apply skills, training, and experience in construction to deliver CORE curriculum to a cohort of students in Grades 10 to 12 (maximum 16).

This is a per diem contract (approx. 40 days, rate dependent on experience). Schedule to be determined in consultation with the District Principal of Careers and Trades.

Service Deliverables
• Constructing wood-frame construction projects curriculum while focusing on workplace safety.
• Liaising with Career Development Manager around budgets when determining materials needed; procuring and delivering materials to site and/or delegating to assistant.
• Maintaining tool inventory and helping to keep tools sharpened and in safe condition.
• Instructing students in learning the safe handling and use of hand and power tools.
• Leading by example to maintain safe work practices on the construction site as projects are built.
• Providing handouts on measuring exercises and applying the principals of Trades Math to projects.
• Modelling and upholding safety practices at all times, including the use of eye and ear protection, use of ladders, scaffolding, and wearing hard hats as outlined in the CORE Curriculum.

The contractor will work with the Manager of Career Development and Community Initiatives and report to the District Principal of Careers and Trades in School District #64.

Qualifications/Documented Evidence
• B.C. or Interprovincial Red Seal Carpenter or equivalent experience in the carpentry trade.
• Knowledge of the Industry Training Authority pathways to trades through both apprenticeship and foundation programs.
• Experience working with youth in an instructional or coaching environment.
