Island Pathways Bike Committee invites the Gulf Islanders to grab their bikes and log a ride during the semi-annual GoByBike week, formerly Bike-to-Work Week. This Fall’s event kicks off on 28 September. GoByBike is a provincial non-profit society founded in Victoria in 1995 to encourage riding bikes in communities across BC to work and to school and more recently as active transportation. Last year in BC, there were 50 374 participants during GoByBike.
PARTICIPATE by signing up at www.gobybikebc.ca and LOGGING A RIDE during the week. There are great prizes to be won including gift cards and a grand prize cycling holiday in Portugal.
This year there will be Bike-to-School events at Fernwood Elementary on Tuesday the 29th and at Salt Spring Elementary on Wednesday the 30th. Kids are encouraged to ride or bring their bikes to school and can take part in various events. At each school, Sean from Outspokin Bike Shop will offer 2-minute tune-ups for kids bikes before the first bell.
On Monday through Thursday mornings during GoByBike week there will be an info table downtown. Look for us to find out about cycling on Salt Spring, the Salish Sea trail, Island Pathways and for a FREE COFFEE.
And our marquee event for the week is a bike rally to promote safe cycling in the Gulf Islands. The rally will be a voice of support for the Salish Sea trail which would provides a safe bike route through Salt Spring Island as part of a larger Vancouver Island loop. Learn more about the plan by joining us at the United Church meadow on Saturday October 3 at 12 noon. And have even more fun if you join us at Portlock Park at 11am to ride to the rally.
