Following the “bomb cyclone” storm in late November, power went out on Penelakut Island and wasn’t restored for several days. 350 Penelakut members on the island lost the moose, elk and other meat and food that they had stored in their freezers.
They now face a food emergency this winter. Gifts of meat and other food are being collected on December 7th, 10 am to 3pm in front of both Country Grocer’s and Thrifty’s here on Salt Spring. All donations gratefully accepted and will be taken to Penelakut Island asap.
Cash donations for the immediate emergency can be made at this link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-our-neighbours-in-need
The Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust would also like to support a future solution. A conversation with the Penelakut Tribe has revealed a dream to have a walk-in freezer for the community with a back up generator. Donations on this page will go to support that dream https://give-can.keela.co/food-emergency-on-penelakut-island
All donations will receive a tax receipt from the Farmland Trust automatically, and all funds will go to the Penelakut Tribe. Thank you from our hearts as we work towards a food secure future for all!
