Position: Temporary Head Coordinator for the Stewards in Training Program

Start Date: late-August 2024

Rate: $32 per hour. Some funds also available for transportation costs.

Overview: The SIT program was founded in 2004 and supports the science/social studies curriculum for Kindergarten to grade 7 by providing an outdoor and hands-on experience for students in various ecosystem settings on Salt Spring Island. The Head Coordinator directs the Assistant Coordinator and works collegially and cooperatively with SSIC’s School Program Committee and SSIC staff. The Head Coordinator reports to the SSIC Executive Director.

This Temporary Head Coordinator position is available as the current Head Coordinator is taking family leave. This position operates by contract.

Hours: This is a part-time contract position from August to December 2024, consisting of hours training with the current coordinator and running the fall program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate the fall 2024 SIT Program, including:
o Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers to assist in the program; ensure all volunteers have current criminal record checks; organize volunteer appreciation event at the end of the fall programming season.
o Contact classroom teachers to sign up for pre-trips and field days; schedule/confirm bus transportation; examine and set up sites and teaching stations; plan, coordinate and deliver all field day and pre-trip experiences, obtain signed SSIC permission forms and submit to SSIC office.
o Maintain, clean and organize equipment; monitor upcoming needs; ensure program expenses are maintained within budget
o Work with Stewards in Training Program Assistant and volunteers to deliver field days
• Collect and submit photos and media waivers to SSIC staff for photo database
• Collect and record program statistics
• Write a year-end SIT Program report and work collaboratively with SSIC staff, as needed, to prepare the report

Requirements:

• University degree or post-secondary education in the natural sciences or education, or equivalent related education and experience
• Previous teaching experience with young people
• Experience in managing, teaching and/or developing outdoor education programs
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience working with volunteers of all ages
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment
• Knowledge of the natural environment and enthusiasm for working outdoors
• Must be physically able to work in a variety of terrains and weather conditions
• Must ensure that all education activities meet health and safety standards
• Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Word and Excel
• Valid driver’s licence and own vehicle
• Criminal record check
• Current first aid certificate (or willing to take training)

Preferred Knowledge and Experience:

• Experience working with schools, non-profit organizations and land trusts
• Knowledge of, and familiarity with, ecosystems on Salt Spring Island

The Stewards in Training Program begins in mid-September. The Temporary Head Coordinator will receive 3-4 days of training in late August - early September.
