Choose to Move is for people:

• 55 and older who are physically inactive or low active
• Physically inactive or low active means they do less than 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week.
• This activity level makes you breathe harder so it is challenging to hold a conversation while doing the activity.
• Who are interested in becoming more physically active and changing their lifestyle
• Who can commit to a 3-month program

This program was developed by Age in Place with funding from the Ministry of Health in conjunction with UBC for health data collection. It is NOT an exercise program but rather:

Choose to Move is a free and flexible evidence-based physical activity support program. It provides older adults who are not regularly active with motivation and support to become more physically active and socially connected.

In this three-month program, participants work with a trained activity coach to develop a personalized physical activity plan to meet their health goals and integrate physical and social activities into their daily routines.

Participants choose activities they will enjoy and are able to do based on their needs, interests, goals, resources, and abilities. Activities can range from fitness classes offered in local communities (e.g., Tai Chi, chair yoga) to more informal individual activities (e.g., gardening, walking).

Participants can also choose to incorporate social-focused activities (e.g., quilting club) into their action plans. Participants learn to monitor and adjust their goals and activities–a lifelong skill–with support from their activity coach.

We promote social connections through facilitated group meetings (10-15 participants per group). These sessions provide a space for participants to share experiences, ideas, and information (e.g., nutrition, stress management) and to engage with their community. Choose to Move participants will find others with similar goals, make friends, and gain a deeper sense of connection to their community.

Our overarching goal is to make a positive, lasting change to support older adults across BC to live more physically active and socially connected lives!
