"Hope For Better Tomorrows"

Like many, I have been moved by Ukraine’s struggle for freedom. The color palette of my piece, 'Hope For Better Tomorrows,' reflects the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag. The two horizontal bands of colour in the flag represent a blue sky over yellow wheat fields. It was important that I symbolize this in my work, alongside highly stylized wild sunflowers, which I knew were the country's national flower and a deeply rooted symbol of identity and resilience.

Typically, I begin with a black background and build up from there, but for this work, I chose a different path from the outset—one of light, love, and a hopeful gaze toward a better future.

Marc’s art bio:

I had never seen anyone 'paint' with paper before, but the idea intrigued me. The urge was so strong that I couldn’t imagine working with any other medium—only paper would do. It wasn’t until my first show, when someone remarked, “Oh, you’re a chigiri-e artist,” that I realized my work is rooted in an ancient Japanese art form dating back over a thousand years.

As a contemporary abstract impressionist, I use paper in innovative ways to reflect my love of the Gulf Islands where I live, and the Canadian West Coast. My colorful works are made from torn or cut pieces of exotic paper, adhered and preserved with clear acrylic polymer, and coated with a protective UV varnish.

I exhibit online, as well as at various fine galleries and exhibitions across Western Canada. My work has been commissioned by collectors throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe."
