It has come time for us to sell the hundreds of art books collected by Matt Steffich, beloved and sorely missed proprietor of Steffich Fine Art. Matt was not only a skilled proprietor and curator of art, he was also an active community member, having resurrected the completion of the (still incomplete) Harbour walk, and was a sought after advisor to many community and political leaders.
What many may not have known was that, for 15 years before Matt came to Salt Spring to open the gallery in 1991, Matt was a professional musician touring the Western provinces with various bands, most notably, the Fins.
Matt's passion for music was first and foremost in his life. He bought his first guitar at age 16 and never looked back. Over the years he owned many guitars, but his most loved were the 1974 Gibson Les Paul gold top and his Gibson ES 335. He also had a 1974 Fender Stratocaster which he kept in the gallery as a conversation starter. He gave guitar and piano lessons, he lectured on musical genres, and he enthusiastically supported young people who showed an interest in music appreciation. His love of music crossed over into his art world with his advocacy of collectible Rock & Roll art posters.
When Matt passed in June 2020, his family wanted to do something to keep his memory alive. We decided that an award for a GISS graduate dedicated to music appreciation would be a wonderful way to keep Matt's love of music alive. Since 2022 we have given $500 to a grad who shows an appreciation of music. The criteria does not require a career in music, but just that the individual will focus on the importance of music by sharing, practicing, appreciating, or promoting music throughout their life.

All proceeds of the sale of these art books will go towards the GISS Matt Steffich music Award. Many community members have asked if they can contribute to this fund, and so we have opened up a GoFundMe account.
