Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity for Anglicans on Salt Spring Island to share with the community a weekend of celebrations for the 25th anniversary of All Saints by-the-Sea.

Some islanders may remember the Service of Blessing, held on October 9th, 1994, for the new church which, after more than a year of thought and preparation, had been transformed from the old St. George’s Church across the road to become the thriving hub of worship and creative activity it is today. Several days of celebration were shared with islanders at that time, including an evening of dance, a concert, a play, an ecumenical hymn sing, and a dinner, all in thanksgiving for a project smoothly completed which included over 30,000 hours of volunteer labour from the community.

From then on, regular worship services have continued, on Sundays and during the week. Appreciated for its ambiance and outstanding acoustics, the church is also a favourite venue for countless concerts. The halls are used, by groups of all kinds, for community meetings, fitness and dance classes, bridge events, and much more.

The anniversary celebrations begin on Friday, October 11th with an Open House in All Saints, from 2-4 pm, where some of the history of the move will be visible in photo displays, slideshows, audio interviews of parishioners past and present, as well as the CBC news footage of the moving of St. George’s Church to the current location. Two or three members of the parish, who played a large part in the venture, will be hosting the day, bringing to life their own memories.

Also on Friday, October 11th, a 7 pm concert will be performed in the church. Poetry in Motion and Music will highlight some of the pieces performed at the evening of dance in 1994, as well as many of the songs from the popular Music and Munch series, and the Flower Festivals of the past. However, this being a vibrant and creative parish, featured dancers Sue Newman, Robbyn Scott, Lolla Devindisch and friends, together with accompanist David Storm, will also be offering some new music and dance interpretations which will continue the tradition of an evening of enjoyable entertainment.

Celebrations continue on Sunday, October 13th, at 10 am, with a service of Holy Eucharist at All Saints followed by a light lunch.

Islanders should note that the Vespers service, planned to take place at St. Mary's in Fulford, on Sunday, October 13th has been postponed to a future date.

Visitors and islanders are all invited to join in the weekend celebrations.
