Gulf Islands Secondary student Antoine Gonzales has won gold in both the regional and provincial welding competitions at the Skills Canada Competition, earning him a place at the upcoming national championships.
Antoine will represent British Columbia at the national competition, where top young tradespeople from across the country compete in their disciplines. His achievement highlights both his personal dedication and the strength of skilled trades training in the region. Antoine is an apprentice at Island Marine Construction and will be mentored for the competition by local welder, Kevin Huebert and the instructors from the Camosun Welding Department.
To attend the national event, Antoine is working to raise approximately $12,000 to cover travel, accommodations, and competition-related costs. He and his supporters are now reaching out to local businesses, organizations, and community members for sponsorship and donations. Ways to support include donating funds or items to the silent auction and coming out to the Burger & Beer night Thursday May 7th at SSI Legion. (links below)
“Winning gold at regionals and then provincials was an incredible experience,” said Antoine. “I’m proud to represent Salt Spring Island and BC, and I’m hoping the community will help me take the next step to nationals.”
Supporters say Antoine’s success reflects the importance of investing in the next generation of skilled trades workers.
“Our community has put incredible effort into the trades programs at GISS over the past 20 years. Antoine’s accomplishment is something the whole community can be proud of,” said Shari Hambrook, Youth Work in Trades Teacher. “This is a chance to support a young person pursuing a meaningful career in the trades while representing our region on a national stage.”
Local businesses and individuals interested in supporting Antoine can contribute through sponsorship or direct donations.
