A quiet cluster of modest cabins, tucked against the trees and resting on blocks, are about to begin a second life on Salt Spring Island.
In a move that feels both practical and distinctly local, Fields is giving away eight small cabins to island residents, inviting individuals, families, or groups to apply for the opportunity to relocate and repurpose them. The initiative comes at a time when Salt Spring continues to face a persistent housing shortage, making even small, immediate solutions meaningful.
“These cabins were brought in for housing,” said Fields company president Jason McDougall. “It only made sense to keep them serving that purpose. The goal is to put usable buildings into the hands of people who need them now.”
From Intended Use to Community Use
The cabins were originally transported from Powell River to Salt Spring Island with a clear purpose: employee housing. As circumstances changed and the units were no longer required, the company faced a decision. Rather than sell or dismantle them, Fields chose a different path.
The result is a straightforward but impactful idea: keep the cabins within the community and allow residents to put them to use where they are needed most.
Each cabin has recently been cleaned and prepared for viewing. While they have been sitting on blocks for several years and show signs of age, the structures remain solid.
“We originally bought them because we thought they had good bones,” said Dean Gagnon of Fields. “Anyone who’s handy with a hammer and a bit of paint could do a lot with them.”

What’s Being Offered
The offer itself is simple:
- Eight small cabins available at no cost
- Open to residents of Salt Spring Island
- Cabins must be moved off-site by June 20
- Applicants are responsible for arranging transport
Moving costs are estimated between $7,000 and $10,000 per cabin, depending on distance and logistics. For many, that will be the primary investment, balanced against the opportunity to acquire a structure that could serve as housing, workspace, or auxiliary accommodation.
Applications are now open via email (customercare@fields.ca). Interested residents are asked to outline how they plan to use the cabin, where it will be located, and their proposed timeline for moving it. Those who apply will receive access to additional photos, layout details, and the opportunity to tour the units in person.
