New Pie Purchasing Policies

There's good news and there's bad news. Good news for the masses of disappointed Fall Fair-goers that couldn't get their much anticipated piece of pie after 2 pm because we were sold out. Bad news for anyone wanting to buy 6 whole pies.

We heard the clarion call from multitudes of people over the years who wanted us to change things. Solutions were suggested and many hours were spent at our Women's Institute meetings trying to find a workable one. We knew we couldn't please everyone but we did the best we could to find a fair compromise.

Our new policy is this:

Limit of one whole pie per customer. No exceptions. We can no longer offer the holding of pies; if you buy a pie, you take it with you. No whole pie sales before 10 a.m. at which time the food services open. All slices of pie to be served on a plate (no buying 6 slices left in a pie tin) Any arguments go to the Institute President and/or the Head Pie Lady. But be warned, you'll risk a …

SSI Women’s Institute Celebrates WI Month By Showcasing Donations From Our Pie Sales

February is Women’s Institute Month, honouring the birthday of Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, the founder of the Women’s Institute. To celebrate this important month, the Salt Spring Island Women’s Institute (AKA “The Pie Ladies”) would like to inform our supportive community of our 2024/2025 donations because many of you ask where the proceeds of our fundraising are distributed. We are a group of 35 members members, and with the enthusiastic help of ten community women, we were able to make and sell 725 pies at the 2025 Fall Fair and Apple Festival. The wonderful support we get from the community when we sell our pies, plus donations from Salt Spring Island gardeners, farmers and grocery stores help keep our costs down so that we can give more money away. In 2025 we reached an important achievement—we sold our 10,000th pie since 2001 at the Fall Fair. Our next milestone will be 15,000 pies sold at both the Fall Fair and the Apple Festival. 2024/2025 Donations From The Salt Spring Island Women's Institute ("The Pie Ladies")

The Salt Spring Island Women’s Institute (also known as the “Pie Ladies”) is starting to prepare for the 2025 pie baking and selling season. We would like to inform our supportive community of our 2024/2025 donations because many of you ask where our funds are allocated. We are a group of almost 30 members, and with the enthusiastic help of five community women, we were able to make and sell 850 pies at the 2024 Museum Day, Fall Fair and Apple Festival. The wonderful support we get from the community when we sell our pies plus donations from Salt Spring Island gardeners, farmers and grocery stores help keep our costs down so that we can give more money away. This year, we are donating over $14,000 to local, provincial, national and international groups. We have made over 12,500 pies since 2001 and have given away over $100,000 in the past ten years, an outstanding amount for a group that has historically had fewer than twenty members. We are a group of only twenty-four members, but with the enthusiastic help of fourteen community women, we were able to make and sell nearly 750 pies at the 2023 Fall Fair and Apple Festival. The wonderful support we get from the community when we sell our pies plus donations from Salt Spring Island gardeners, farmers and grocery stores help keep our costs down so that we can give more money away. This year, we are donating over $12,000 to local, provincial, national and international groups. We have made nearly 12,000 pies since 2001 and have given away over $10,000 in the past ten years, an outstanding amount for a group that has historically had fewer than twenty members. The wonderful support we get from the community when we sell our pies plus donations from Salt Spring Island gardeners, farmers and grocery stores help keep our costs down so that we can give more money away. This year, we are donating over $12,000 to local, provincial, national and international groups.
