Thinking Like An Island

In the early 1970’s while living in California I became aware of two visionary initiatives in a faraway place called British Columbia- the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) devoted to protecting farmland for future generations, and the Islands Trust whose mandate was to protect the unique environment of a small chain of islands located off the west coast of the province. The idea that the people of British Columbia had come together to give legal protection to the lands that feed our bodies and to the natural environment that feeds our souls seemed almost unbelievable in an era when unrestrained greed and consumption were the coin of the realm. At the time I looked to our northern neighbors with glowing admiration, seeing the ALR and the Islands Trust as beacons of light, amazed that protection of the natural world and consideration of future generations was not just an idea or a dream, but that it had been codified and made into law. An Urgent Plea to The One Million People Living in Canada Who Are Eligible to Vote in U.S. Elections

Opinion: Close to a million people living in Canada still retain the ability to vote in U.S. elections. The potential influence of that many voters is profound and the stakes could not be higher. My great-grandparents came to the U.S. by ship as refugees, arriving at Ellis Island in New York with only the clothes they were wearing. My great-grandfather supported his young family as an itinerant salesman travelling by horse and wagon, peddling mules and eyeglasses. The family eventually settled in southern Delaware, where they were able to do what would never have been possible in their home country: own land. They purchased farms, opened a store that provided supplies and free advice to local farmers, and eventually created an enterprise so successful that the family was able to send my father and his siblings to college, another impossible dream. Thinking Like An Island

Every spring for the last 43 years I have followed the same routine. I turn under green manure crops, spread compost, prepare fields, and direct seed and transplant. The seeds and small plants that go into the ground are the product of months and sometimes years of propagation work. The compost is made throughout the prior season, and the complex crop rotation and field plans are the result of a winter of careful thinking and consideration. The soils are built and improved over decades. Before the first seed gets planted, many months and thousands of dollars have already been invested into a professional endeavour that requires decades to develop and perfect. This spring is different.
