A Community Working Together Towards Food Security

A Community Working Together Towards Food Security

As the growing season gets underway, we have much to celebrate and be thankful for at Harvest Farm at Island Community Services. A giant heartfelt thank you goes out to Windsor Plywood, Forsyth Farm, and Charles Excavating for their generous support of Harvest Farm Central at Brinkworthy and Lower Ganges Roads. Their contributions have helped us complete important work, including improving drainage around our greenhouses, moving topsoil into growing spaces, and preparing the land for the arrival of our AgriKit – a modular food processing and storage unit, thanks to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. These improvements put us in a strong position to plant cover crops this season and establish winter crops in our greenhouses later this year. We are grateful for the support of local businesses that help make this work possible and strengthen food security in our community. Our Grow a Row campaign is off to a great start, with 14 community members already signed up to g…

Thank You for Nourishing the Community

Thank You for Nourishing the Community

Because of the enormous generosity of the individuals and organizations on Salt Spring Island, the Food Bank at Island Community Services was able to help keep food on the table for hundreds of local residents throughout 2025. On behalf of those served, Island Community Services would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to every individual, family, business, and organization that donated to our food bank. Your kindness has made an immediate and meaningful difference for neighbors facing food insecurity. Every contribution, whether it be food, funds, or your time, helps ensure that no one has to choose between putting food on the table and meeting other basic needs. In August, Salt Spring Groove organized a musical fundraiser with guests SugarBeat at the Jam Factory in partnership with Island Savings Fill the Cupboard initiative, and Windsor Plywood. Dave Roland with Sugarbeat at the Fill the Cupboard food bank event Other incredible support from the community ca…

50 Years of Food, Farms, and Friendship

50 Years of Food, Farms, and Friendship

What began as a cupboard became a movement Island Community Services - HARVEST FOOD PROGRAMS Food security is one of Island Community Services' (ICS) longest and most tangible commitments. From a humble cupboard in 1975 to today’s integrated Harvest food programs, the story of ICS’s food services is one of vision, growth, and community care. The “Harvest” family of food programs includes growing, harvesting, cooking, preserving, and distributing food. These services work together to reach low-income families and individuals through meal programs, community fridges, the Food Bank, and home deliveries. HARVEST KITCHEN Operating from the commercial kitchen at Fulford Hall, the Harvest Kitchen supplies food for the Emergency Shelter, Harvest Home Meals, a weekly community meal held in partnership with several community churches and other ICS programs. Originally located at ICS’s Core Building on McPhillips Ave in 2017, the kitchen centralized meal prep for all ICS food …

Hunger Count 2025: Food Banks as a Lifeline

Hunger Count 2025: Food Banks as a Lifeline

Food Banks Canada released their annual Hunger Count report for 2025 on October 27th, highlighting the fallout from the ever-escalating pace of food cost increases. The Hunger Count is an annual event counting attendance at participating food banks across the country for the month of March. “Every year, food banks across the country are setting new records,” reads the opening line of the summary of findings. Food banks recorded almost 2.2 million visits in the 2025 count - double that of only six years ago. While the monthly Consumer Price Index reporting general inflation has been hovering around 2% over the last year, the cost of food was reported almost double that, at 3.9% increase in September. Likewise, the cost of housing has far outpaced any increase in the purchasing power of average wages over the last several years. On Salt Spring, 45% of renters and 20% of homeowners are spending more than 30% of their income on housing according to the latest Vital Signs…

Point-In-Time Homeless Count 2025

Point-In-Time Homeless Count 2025

The Point-In-Time Homeless count was repeated on Salt Spring Island in 2025, showing a welcome hiatus in the trend of the last several counts of radically rising numbers. Importantly, however, the number of people experiencing homelessness in the 2025 count still far exceeds available shelter accommodation on Salt Spring, leaving the portion of unsheltered homeless on the island disproportionately larger than other areas of the province in the BC wide count. The 2023 count was 137 individuals, down from an all time high in the previous count of 2023 of 165, and falling below the 2021 level of 143. The majority of the counted individuals on Salt spring (64%) were between the ages of 25 and 54 with a rising proportion considered unsheltered (66% from 64% in previous count).

Harvest Farm Central Continues to Build

Harvest Farm Central Continues to Build

October 24, 2025 The site of Island Community Services’ Harvest Farm Central at 131 Brinkworthy Road celebrated the opening of the newly expanded facilities on Thursday, October 16th. Two new greenhouses, visible for passers-by on Lower Ganges Road, now grace the site across from the BC Hydro Station and next to the new firehall construction, thanks to generous funding of the Community Spaces initiative of Mid-Island Co-op. The completion of the greenhouses is the latest in a build up of infrastructure of the site, which is an expansion of the Harvest Farm run by Island Community Services for since 2012 when the Burgoyne Valley Community Gardens was established by the Shaw Family Trust and developed by the Farmland Trust. Harvest Farm Central at the Brinkworthy site has seen fencing, irrigation and development of parking and road access along with Hydro service with the help of United Way grants in the past. “Thanks to the generous contributions of Mid-island…

Province Confirms Funding for Adult Mental Health Supports on Salt Spring

Province Confirms Funding for Adult Mental Health Supports on Salt Spring

Following an era of uncertainty surrounding the last provincial election and re-organization of ministries, it was confirmed last month that adults living with mental-health challenges will continue to have access to low- or no-cost counselling services to help them get well. “When someone takes the courageous step of reaching out for mental-health support, services must be there for them,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “Over the past six years, thousands of people across B.C. have received low- and no-cost counselling, many for the very first time. With this investment, we’re ensuring that people can continue to find affordable, life-changing mental-health care when they need it most.” Salt Spring Island was one of the 44 communities in the province benefitting from the program delivered through the Community Action Initiative with the Community Counselling program at Island Community Services. The Community Action Initiative (CAI), which is a non-profit organ…

From Pig Pens to Policy - Over 5 Decades of Recycling on Salt Spring

From Pig Pens to Policy - Over 5 Decades of Recycling on Salt Spring

Tucked into a forested corner of Salt Spring Island, the Recycling Depot, operated by Island Community Services (ICS), quietly powers regional environmental action—sorting, storing, and shipping thousands of kilos of diverted waste each year. At its helm is Peter Grant, a calm, consistent force who has led the program for over 30 years, shaping it into one of the most comprehensive community recycling systems in the province. But Salt Spring’s recycling roots run even deeper. Local Startups to Provincial Systems Salt Spring’s recycling journey began in the 1970s with SPEC (Society Promoting Ecological Conservation) members and community volunteers. One of the earliest drop-off sites was a roadside bin on Churchill Road—an old pig pen repurposed by Ray Hill. Volunteers collected waste and drove it to Victoria themselves. Operations grew organically over the years, from a shed at Mouat’s on the Ganges dock, to weekend runs in Vesuvius supported by the Ladies Auxiliary Fi…

Active Aging on Salt Spring Island

Active Aging on Salt Spring Island

The Island Community Services (ICS) Active Aging program builds on decades of grassroots support, including the longstanding Better at Home initiative, run by Shellyse Szakacs for over 10 years. Under the leadership of Kyla Duncan, Clinical Director, and alongside Deanna Roewood, Seniors’ Community Connector, the team is now re-imagining aging on the island using the provincial Active Aging framework, delivered in partnership with United Way BC. ICS, celebrating 50 years of community service this year, has been supporting seniors since its earliest days, often through partnerships with local groups. In the 1980s, community leaders like Mary Toynbee, Bob Appleton, and ICS staff member Rhema Cossover helped launch the Seniors for Seniors initiative and the original Seniors Wellness program. For years, ICS led a collaborative wellness effort alongside Salt Spring Seniors, the Gulf Islands Seniors Residence Association, and Lady Minto Hospital. Today, the work continues with e…

Youth Resiliency at The Core Youth Centre Gets a Boost

Youth Resiliency at The Core Youth Centre Gets a Boost

June 25, 2025 Salt Spring Island youth are getting more supports for mental health and substance abuse prevention with an expanded program area at Island Community Services. A recent awarding of an Island Health Youth Resiliency Grant will allow the agency to bolster the harm reduction component of the Youth Centre at The Core into a key program area. The Youth Centre is a central program within the youth services at Island Community Services, providing a safe and supportive place for youth aged 11-18 after school from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at The Core Building at 134 McPhillips Avenue in Ganges. The program is available for drop-in with no registration or appointment necessary. It serves free and at-cost food and features planned program activities. “The Child and Youth Mental Health team has included a position focused on substance use counselling for many years,” explains Kyla Duncan, Clinical Director at Island Community Services. “This will strengthen and formaliz…

Emergency Shelter Status Clarified

Emergency Shelter Status Clarified

February 14, 2025 - Island Community Services (ICS) is clarifying key facts around the operation of the Emergency Shelter based at their main office location at 268 Fulford-Ganges Road on Salt Spring Island today. The shelter was never closed, despite postings to the contrary. People should be wary of any postings publishing details of the Emergency Shelter that are not from Island Community Services. The shelter is open 24/7/365 and available for people who are experiencing homelessness and need a place to stay indoors. The Emergency Shelter is funded by BC Housing and is a minimal -barrier shelter to ensure the most vulnerable people are served. ICS will never publish details of the people being served by the shelter, including gender or number of individuals at any time. The shelter is always open and accessible to those who need it and is a well known resource for those in need and with all community partners including RCMP, Island Health, Emergency Services, th…

The ‘Let’s Do Brunch’ Tuesday meal program is cancelled and will not be operating for the next 2 weeks at least. Showers and laundry facilities will be available for people at the Outreach Centre onsite in a limited fashion and with no gathering of people. For people who are not able to make it to the Food Bank on Tuesdays, a limited number of pre-filled food bags are available at the main building at 268 Fulford-Ganges.
