What We Lose
A couple of weeks ago I read an article here that I have tried to shake, but have found myself coming back to it over and over again.
I have never written anything publicly in my life before. I've never felt the need to. Nor have I ever felt the need to be on social media. I know it can be a great tool for connection and community building, but too often the dialogue I see there is mean-spirited and disingenuous. It is the type of dialogue that has become the norm in the new, and in my opinion, disgusting world of MAGA to the south, and I am heartbroken to see it so casually wielded against people in our own community.
In this case, I'm talking about Ethan Wilding. He is a friend. But that is not why I feel compelled to say something.
I don't doubt the writer's sincerity or her love for this island. But the man described in that story, and in other social media posts before it, is not a man I recognize. And I suspect, not one that the writers actually even know. They d…
