Film Screening - Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure

Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure is a new film with everything you need to know about the Kinder Morgan pipeline battle, written and directed by Vancouver local photographer and filmmaker Zack Embree. Film will be shown at Artspring on Friday, May 25th at 7 pm, followed by a panel discussion with the director, local journalist Briony Penn and co-founder of CRED (Conversations for Responsible Economic Development) Tarah Stafford. Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure weaves together the stories of people impacted by the Trans Mountain Pipeline Project, the broken National Energy Board review process used to approve the pipeline, Canada’s commitments at the Paris Climate Talks and the innovators working towards the low-carbon economy. Water, water—everywhere?

Sitting down with Ken Marr in the middle of the summer isn’t the easiest proposition. It’s high season for building projects on the island. As the shop has become a supplier for irrigation and rainwater collection equipment, it’s also the time when homeowners and businesses are making plans so they don’t get left high and dry. I sat down with Ken to learn more about why Windsor Plywood chose to support Transition Salt Spring’s 2015 Eco Living and Home Tour. The tour, taking place Sunday July 26th, offers islanders and visitors a chance to take in well-crafted examples of green building, renewable energy technologies, intensive high production greenhouses and, of particular interest in the midst of this drought, innovative rainwater collection and irrigation systems. Saturday Market vendors of Salt Spring Team up to Raise $1500

On July 13th on Salt Spring Island, artists, farmers and food vendors got together to raise nearly $1500 for Pull Together. This was amazing work by people who already work amazingly hard. Special shout out to the Raging Grannies who gave us $100 and belted out some anti-pipeline anthems! Here are some great photos from the day’s festivities, which took place as part of the annual Sea Capers festival. Thanks much to Jack Rosen of Island Escapades who captained the day, leading boat building and boat races AND rocking a great online fundraiser with his kayak guiding staff & friends. Video: Reckoning with Reconciliation - The fight to Save Grace

A stone’s throw from the bustling marinas of Salt Spring Island lies Grace Islet. Blazing with camas flowers, the islet has been protected as a cemetery by indigenous grave keepers for centuries. How does the BC government relate to such traditions? By allowing a luxury house to be built directly overtop of the burial cairns on Grace Islet. The equivalent—a longhouse set-up on Ross Bay Cemetery—would be unthinkable. The double-standards around protections afforded to settler, versus First Nations, burial grounds has struck a chord with islanders. Activists have taken to the water, attempting to interrupt construction. Businesses such as Slegg Lumber and Island Marine Construction have withdrawn from the project. For many, it’s a matter of common decency: “I consider those laid there my ancestors and would certainly stand up for the protection of your ancestors’ graves,” says protestor Joe Akerman.
