The first Full Moon of the year lights up the sky at 2:03 am (PT) on January 3rd at 13° Cancer. It reminds us of the importance of tending to our deepest roots and asking what truly nourishes us. We can use this first Full Moon of 2026 as a touchstone, a sanctuary that calls us back to what we belong to, so no matter how accelerated the next few years, we remember the way home.
For those who have been wandering for a long time, this can be a homecoming - balm for the soul that nurtures and protects, that softens the rough edges and welcomes us back into the embrace of belonging.
Welcome home, dear traveller.
Cancer symbolism is intimately connected to the ocean, the waxing and waning of the tides moving from receptivity to emotional fullness and introspective retreat. The shifting internal ebbs and flows of our unconscious, as well as our connection to our greater human inheritance.
Unfathomably deep, connected to ancestral memory, and the roots of the subconscious, Cancer is in a sense, our spiritual home, the home we all subconsciously long to return to. Now is the time to make sure your foundation is sturdy and supportive and that your emotional needs are being met.
During this Full Moon, seek wisdom from the Elders to provide perspective. This is also a good time to process your emotions and feelings.
Are you carrying old stuff that it’s time to process and release? What do you need to feel safe? You might feel pensive today, melancholy or nostalgic.
Cancer embodies the archetypal principle of the Great Mother, and resonates with motifs of home, belonging, security, attachment style, family, roots, memories, and emotions.
Whether or not our relationship with the personal mother was a difficult one, or our family of origin was less than idyllic, we belong to the Mother of us All. Although she might be called by different names – Danu, Parvati, Demeter, or Mother Mary – she waits for us to come home and remember our inherent belonging.
To me, Cancer brings up the idea of “temenos” – sanctuary, a safe place set apart from the demands of the world where we can find solace. Imagine a Medieval walled garden within. A place that is safe, secure, and contemplative.
Where is this place for you?
We may prefer to keep close to the hearth this weekend, as this Full Moon will have us feeling all the feels. Know that any tears you shed are sacred, cleansing, and healing.
The Cancer Full Moon is also a time to honor the stories of those who came before us. Ancestral patterns can be illuminated, shining a light on your path and helping to make sense of current healing dilemmas.
Cancer is associated with attachment style, and this Full Moon can bring up triggers around attachment connected to unhealed attachment wounds from the past.
Attachment bonds are formed in early childhood (a time associated with the moon and Cancer) and an understanding of our own attachment style can help us understand our behaviors and perceptions around intimacy in our closest relationships.
This Full Moon is widely conjoined with Jupiter in Cancer, the sign of its exaltation. Expect big feelings, open heartedness, emotional contentment and comfort. However, the Moon will also oppose Venus and Mars in Capricorn, which may create some friction or moodiness, but I think Jupiter will prevail and all should conclude amicably.
To deepen into the magic of this Full Moon in Cancer, make time to be near the water and gather with family of the heart. Because Cancer is a water sign, working with the water element can be beneficial: for example, a ritual bath to begin the new year.
House blessings, lunar scrying, making moon water, ocean and tidal magic also fall under the domain of the Full Moon in Cancer.
Approach this Full Moon with softness. With the strength that comes with vulnerability and the courage to cultivate healthy emotional boundaries that protect what needs healing.
Nourish your body and spirit with simple comfort foods like soup, congee, oatmeal, herbal tea, bone broth and ginger. Make time for rest and restoration and use the first Full Moon of 2026 as an anchor of safety as you move through the coming year.
In the words of fourteenth century medieval mystic, Mother Julian of Norwich:
All shall be well
And all shall be well
And all manner of things shall be well
New year blessings!
