When you think of daily care for your gums and teeth, do you envision an herbalist? Not many of us do. Likely because few herbalists are focused on dental care. Certainly not here on Salt Spring Island. In fact, Saci Spindler is the only one.
Her journey into dental care began when she noticed that her two-year-old son had dental decay. As an herbalist with a penchant for research and alchemy, Saci first examined his nutrition to see if she could find the cause.
Then she created an antibacterial mouthwash concentrate that her son nicknamed “Fire Dragon” because of its tingling and stimulating effects. And the best part? The mouthwash proved effective, and at every dentist’s visit after that, her son was given a clean bill of health.
Turning to herbs for answers was not something new for Saci. At age 15, after a childhood of being treated with antibiotics for illnesses, Saci walked into Self Heal Herbs in Victoria and found herbs that could support her condition. She hasn’t looked back since.
At age 20, she returned to her birthplace―the wild green of Sombrio Beach―to learn from the plants themselves before beginning formal studies with Rosemary Gladstar in Vermont.
Rosemary’s use of herbs in every aspect of her life infused Saci with inspiration. It was something she visualized for herself. And it was one of those defining moments when several years later, she observed her own herbal repertoire: from nourishing skin products medicinal tinctures, tonics, elixirs, healing salves, and tea blends to consultations and teaching. She had arrived!
Every year, students come from near and far for Saci’s apprenticeship program, with most students finding her through word of mouth. Each cohort runs from April to October, with the plants’ cycles. This was her eleventh year.
Always an impassioned student of herbalism herself, Saci took a course that had a dental aspect―not from the herbalist perspective but from the toxicity perspective. She learned about all the harmful ingredients in toothpastes purchased in the health stores or pharmacies.
With this new knowledge, Saci’s fine-tuned a toothpaste and dental serum―perfect sidekicks for the mouthwash. When creating these dental formulas, she was driven by two desires:
- to omit any ingredients that don’t serve our health: because of the high absorption rate through the mouth’s epithelial lining, harmful ingredients have direct access to the bloodstream and go through all the vital organs before being excreted.
- to create a dental product packed full of beneficial botanicals that could multitask: remineralize the teeth, enhance digestion, and support immune function.
When asked what motivates her in her business, she said, “When I distill down to the essence of what I desire to share, it’s really about practicing deeper self-care.”
If you love the idea of deeper self-care for your gums and teeth, Saci is offering a dental workshop Sunday, November 6, from 2pm to 5pm. She can be found in the phone book’s Health Care Directory under "Herbalists" and Facebook, both under her name, Saci Spindler.
