The Canadian production of The Phantom of the Opera premiered on Sept. 20, 1989 at the Pantages Theatre in Toronto. It broke all box office records of its day for advance ticket sales, and then ran for 10 years.
The star of the show, playing Christine, was soprano Rebecca Caine, the same Rebecca Caine who will perform in recital at ArtSpring this Friday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. Together with pianist Robert Kortgaard, Caine will present a program of great hits from her many years as a star of both musical theatre and opera.
Her career started at age 19 in London’s West End production of Oklahoma! It carried on through the roles of Eliza in My Fair Lady, Cosette in Les Miserables, as well as important operatic roles at Glyndbourne.
When it came time for Garth Drabinsky to bring Phantom to Canada, Andrew Lloyd Webber himself urged Rebecca Caine for the role of Christine, having greatly admired her portrayal in the London production.
Since her Toronto Phantom, Caine has performed frequently with the Canadian Opera Company in works ranging from Monteverdi to Peter Maxwell Davies and the huge territory in between. Internationally, she has appeared with Scottish Opera, Spoleto Festival, Vlaamse Opera, National Theatre of Prague and many others.
Over the years, ArtSpring has presented a number of major classical singers, ranging from Ben Heppner to Isabel Bayrakdarian, but this is the first time that Salt Spring audiences will have the chance to hear a major star who has reaped success in both the classical world and in musical theatre.
Robert Kortgaard himself is one of Canada’s most sought-after accompanists. Salt Spring audiences have heard him with soprano Suzie Leblanc, and in a lovely piano four-hands evening last year with Peter Tiefenbach.
A reception hosted by Country Grocer after the performance will allow the audience to meet and chat with Rebecca Caine and to welcome her to our community.
